Swifts are flying to Douglas!!
The Swifts are busy preparing and rehearsing songs for their away trip to Douglas in the Isle of Man. Around 45 choristers will be taking off from Luton Airport on Friday 15th October for a weekend at the first ever Festival of Choirs. Whilst the actual competition is at the heart of the Festival, we are hoping to find time to explore the Island. The competition will be held in the Island’s premier concert venue, the Villa Marina Royal Hall, with seating for 1300. Alwyn Humphreys, MBE, will be the Chief Official Adjudicator. (You may already know that he held the post of Musical Director of the world famous Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir and is a well known choral arranger). The organisers of this new Festival have decided to dispense with a ‘set test piece’ and each choir will now be required to sing three contrasting own choice pieces, one of which must be unaccompanied.
We are assured of a warm Manx welcome and are looking forward to meeting new, like – minded choirs.
A footnote must be added to this article to thank the South Woodham Ferrers Town Council for their financial support – without which we would not have been able to compete. We are hoping to ‘fly the flag’ for SWF and will let you know how we get on.
