Croydon Concert Review June 2019

As the gentlemen called it- Croydon boys sing off with the Essex girls!

This was our biennial date with the wonderful mens choir, co-ordinated by musical directors Clive Smith and Roger Pinsent, at Shirley Methodist Church, Surrey.

Once again this was a fabulous concert, with the gentlemen opening the evening with a rousing Soldiers’ Chorus and ending with the equally stirring Battle Hymn of the Republic. Each choir performed 10 pieces, with the Swift Singers entertaining the audience with a variety of musical styles, including Lullaby of Broadway, and Let the River Run. The choirs performed two joint numbers, Gwahoddiad and the I Believe/Ave Maria Quodlibet, which Clive and Roger conducted together. Following rapturous applause from the packed audience this piece was repeated for the encore.

It was agreed that the choirs complemented each other perfectly, with contrasting pieces of music.

The two choirs then retired to Sandilands Cricket Club for an exuberant social evening and sing-off, which was loud and lively! All were served with excellent refreshments and Roger hailed “ a very fine night of music making and togetherness” as all agreed that both choirs sang as brilliantly as always.

Many thanks were extended to all who worked hard behind the scenes to organise the event, prepare food, organise ticket sales, and to the warm welcome that the ladies received.

Croydon’s chair, Kim Ormond, and Swift’s Chair, Philippa,  both thanked everyone for a really enjoyable night.

The Swift Singers look forward to welcoming the gentlemen to South Woodham Ferrers again in 2021.
